How to Restore Jailbroken iPhone / iPad / iPod touch on iOS 10 to Factory Settings Without Updating (Cydia Eraser Alternative)

0

Lots of people are enjoying the iOS 10 jailbreak by Luca Todesco. It’s great to have the jailbreak, but many also need to have some way of restoring their device while keeping their jailbreak. Normally, when you restore your device to factory settings it will be updated to the latest iOS version (which might not have a jailbreak). Cydia Eraser is a package on cydia that is usually able to get around this issue, but it has not yet been updated for iOS 10.

However, some developers within the jailbreak community have recently released something that gives basically the same functionality as Cydia Eraser. Their Cydia package, titled ‘OSRestoreX‘, removes all jailbreak files from the device, allowing you to use the ‘Erase all Content and Settings’ option inside the settings app. This resets the device back to its original factory settings, without having to update it.

One thing to keep in mind when using this is that it has not been tested and approved by a known jailbreak developer, meaning it MIGHT not be quite as reliable as Cydia Eraser. However, in my testing it has worked perfectly.

Requirements & Notes

  • This will only work on iOS 10.0.1 to 10.2
  • This will remove ALL data on the device, meaning you should backup anything you need before doing this.

Written Guide

  1. Backup any data from the device you want to keep, as this will delete everything from it.
  2. Open Cydia on your jailbroken iOS 10 device and tap on the ‘Sources‘ tab at the bottom. In here, tap the ‘Edit‘ button in the top right, then the ‘Add‘ button in the top left. A box should appear asking for a source link. In the box, type ‘coolstar.org/publicrepo‘, then tap the ‘Add Source‘ button.
  3. Once the source has been added, tap on it in the sources list. Tap on the ‘System‘ option and find the package called ‘Stashing for iOS 9.2 – 10.2‘. Tap on it, then tap on the ‘Install‘ button in the top right. Next, tap the ‘Confirm‘ button in the top right to begin the install. Once the install completes, reboot your device to complete the process.
  4. Re-enable your jailbreak using the yalu102 app. Open Cydia on your jailbroken iOS 10 device and tap on the ‘Sources‘ tab at the bottom. In here, tap the ‘Edit‘ button in the top right, then the ‘Add‘ button in the top left. A box should appear asking for a source link. In the box, type ‘repo.jailbreakhub.org‘, then tap the ‘Add Source‘ button.
  5. Once the source has been added, tap on it in the sources list. Tap on the ‘System‘ option and find the package called ‘OSRestoreX‘. Tap on it, then tap on the ‘Install‘ button in the top right. Next, tap the ‘Confirm‘ button in the top right to begin the install.
  6. Once the install begins, you will be given 10 seconds to cancel if you change your mind. After 10 seconds, you must not close Cydia or lock your device. Once all of the jailbreak files have been removed from the device, Cydia should crash. At this point you must not respring or reboot the device.
  7. Open the Settings app on your device and navigate to ‘General>Reset’. Once there, tap on the ‘Erase All Content and Settings‘ button. Confirm that you want to reset the device, and the reset should proceed. This should take a few minutes, depending on how much stuff is on your device.
  8. Once the reset has completed, the device should reboot to the setup page. You can now setup your device and re-jailbreak using Yalu102!
